with more than 18 inches of rain. all the way into the san francisco area, almost 4 inches of rain in that time period. three storms shoving that rain up against the coastline. give that rain a lift and you get the total, 12 to 18 inches of rain as a three-event total in those areas. today is a little break. today is the day you scrape the mud off. you get the trees out of the way. you try to get the power back on and our cecilia vega is just east of san francisco area this morning. good morning. >> reporter: hey, sam, good morning to you. boy, you said it. to see the mess this series of storms has caused, take a look at this. outside of san francisco, as you said, massive piles of debris. this huge hole in the middle of this neighborhood. these people have a long way to go before they recover from this storm. from falling trees crushing this car in oregon, to rocksides outside of sacramento, to rivers raging in reno, and flooded streets along the coast, up to one foot of rain, heavy winds and flooding caused by three storms in less than a week have left the west coast a soggy mess

. almost six feet of snow since fri friday. the flooding pictures as well. sonoma county. san francisco, five inches of rain in the month of december. more than twice they would normally see. this is a wet and rainy time of the year often. but this is a little bit unusual. here's where the system drags in the tough severe weather over the next couple of days. from houston to dallas. know that tomorrow, this spreads in. we're a little concerned there might be a tornado outbreak in the heavy red shaded area. 30 tornadoes since we have been keeping records in the 1950s have broken out in that christmas daytime period. we may see the christmas storms as well. this is where the snow will roll here. 5 to 10 inches of snow. actual la, little rock, i don't remember when little rock had christmas day snow. 1926 was the last time. now you have seen the boards. this is likely to be a travel trouble. alex perez is standing by in chicago o'hare. >> reporter: the first big wave of holiday travellers got their start over the weekend. the second wave will begin soon. along with the front of bad weather
and the next several days for millions. from san francisco to syracuse, many around the country are finding their holiday travel plans ruined. a huge snowstorm on the west coast hit northern california hard, causing hundreds of delays and canceled flights in and out of san francisco. with the average delay lasting over two hours. the high winds and severe conditions have left many drivers in the sierras unable to stay on the road. >> the roads are pretty bad. there was a loft spinouts. >> reporter: major snow is expected to bring snowfall to oklahoma tonight. complicating travel for the sooner state three years after santa brought a record-breaking 14 inches of snow on christmas eve, stting the roadway down for the eving. >> we have family trying to come up from oklahoma. they turned around and went back. >> reporter: cities like cleveland, detroit, st. louis, chicago, just in time for one of the busiest travel days of the season, the day after christmas, when tense of millions of americans will be on the move. people in central new york woke up to blajts of snow this morning, jamminging up

parts of california in the san francisco bay area. wind gusts up to 54 miles per hour in the city. and outside, some of the higher terrain had 88-mile-per-hour gusts. and we go to nevada because it is not just california. they are sandbagging, preparing for more rain. the truckee river will likely crest and flood by tomorrow. some of the heaviest flooding they've seen in more than a decade. finally, it's not just northern california and the pacific northwest. it's southern california that feels the high surf. so, some surfers probably very happy. but could be dangerous. but it's something to note if you're planning to go to the beach in southern california. let's look at what we expect for more rainfall coming up. tonight into early tomorrow, that's when the next bulk of it hits. you'll have four to eight inches in that red area. redding, you're included. sacramento, just on the outside of it. the wind speeds will gust easily to 40-mile-per-hour-plus. 60 to 80 in any of the red area. and finally, high surf going to be an issue, all the way through the weekend. i'll have so much mo
